3 Tips for a Happy, Healthy Holiday

|| H O L I D A Y S || Tis the season to keep getting in my Pilates workouts! (Photo courtesy Balance, Your Pilates and Yoga Studio)

Maintaining my usual fitness routine while traveling and spending time with family is a challenge. I literally have to sneak out of the house to get my workouts in while my family wants to feed me all day!

Having a similar dilemma? Here are 3 Tips for maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle during the holiday season!

1 — Go to the grocery store and purchase healthy eats to keep in the house during your stay.

Thankfully my dad has a nutribullet and always keeps fresh and frozen fruits, veggies, oats, and almond milk in stock. Although I go out to eat a lot when visiting home, I still am able to make my green smoothies in the morning for breakfast and have healthy snacks between meals.

2 — Find local gyms and fitness studios to go to for workouts.

When I travel, I always take time to do some research on studios nearby the location I will be staying. It can be fun to find new places to workout and I also get to meet new people in different cities and countries. I will often take an hour long pilates, yoga, or other type of group exercise class where I will still be close to family and friends.

3 — Encourage friends and family members to exercise and eat nutritious foods.

Going for walks, bike rides, taking group fitness classes, and exercising at home is a great way to be active and spend time with your family. Share fitness tips and some of your favorite healthy recipes with your loved ones. I enjoy showing my dad smoothie recipes and learning some of his as well. I also love teaching my little cousins pilates and yoga (pictured above).

Wishing you a Happy & Healthy Holiday Season!!! Angilique xo

Healthy Eats: Avocado Egg Bake

Breakfast is the most important and just so happens to be my favorite meal of the day. When I have to leave home for early morning clients, I typically make a green smoothie to-go. On the days when I have the morning off or have a later start, I enjoy taking the time to make a sit-down breakfast like this delicious Avocado Egg Bake!

Avocados and eggs are the perfect combination for a morning meal as they are packed with protein and fiber, that will keep you satisfied until your next meal. Try this easy recipe and feel free to use your favorite toppings like tomatoes, basil, cheese, and bacon.

Prep Time: 5min

Cook Time: 15-20min

Serves: 1-2ppl

_______________________________

Ingredients:

– 1 medium size avocado, halved and pitted

– 2 eggs

– salt and pepper to taste

– red pepper flakes (optional)

– 1tbs feta cheese (optional)

– 1 tsp chives (optional)

Procedures:

1 — Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

2 — Scoop out a small portion of the center of each half of the avocado with a spoon.

3 —  Crack 1 egg open into each half of the avocado, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

4 — Bake 15-20min, then top with red pepper flakes, chives, and feta cheese (or your favorite toppings) and serve.

_______________________________

Tips: Make sure your avocado is a big enough size to be able to hold the eggs. Also, be sure to use a baking pan that can support your avocado to prevent the eggs from spilling off the side. I tried to use a tray at first and my egg was spilling so I opted for a cupcake baking pan and placed foil inside to keep the avocado halves in place.

Healthy Eats: Skinny Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

|| PUMPKIN || Pumpkin pie for breakfast?! Yes!!! With Halloween and Thanksgiving right around the corner, Fall is pumpkin season! Though a traditional pumpkin pie is high in calories and sugar, I made a healthier low calorie version of pumpkin pie as a smoothie.

Pumpkin is rich in nutrients and vitamins such as vitamin A which promotes eye health, and fiber which contributes to weightloss. The Greek yogurt in this recipe also adds calcium, potassium, protein, and a creamy texture which makes this smoothie taste like you are having desert for breakfast!

_______________________________

Ingredients:

– 1/2 cup organic pumpkin

– 1 frozen banana

– 1 cup vanilla almond milk

– 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt

– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

– 2 cubes of ice

Directions:

1 — Blend all ingredients together in a blender and enjoy! (I use my Nutribullet)

Note: For a sweeter flavor, feel free to add a touch of honey or maple syrup. For more protein, add 1-2 scoops of your favorite protein powder. For more spice, you can increase the amount of pumpkin spice and cinnamon, and you can also add nutmeg.

5 Reasons to Book a Wellness Retreat

Do you ever see beautiful pictures of wellness retreats and wonder what it would be like to go on one? I did, so decided to book one over the summer.

As an avid yogi, I had been wanting to go on a yoga retreat for quite some time. Though many retreats are held in exotic locations like Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Bali, I opted for a weekend retreat with one of my favorite NYC teachers. It was such a wonderful experience that I cannot wait to sign up for the next one!

Here are my 5 Reasons to Book a Wellness Retreat:

1 — Deepen Your Practice

On a retreat participants are typically offered 2 classes per day. This gives you the time to deepen your practice which can include working on physical postures, focusing on your breath, and sitting still during meditation.

2 — Healthy Eats

Most retreats provide nutritious meals throughout each day. On my recent trip to Heathen Hill Yoga in upstate New York, organic vegan cuisine was served using fresh produce straight from their farm. The food was so delicious that I even purchased a cookbook from the gift shop so that I could make some of the same recipes at home.

3 — UNPLUG!!!

In a time period where many of us rely so heavily on our technology to communicate and do business, it is essential to take a break and unplug! It feels so good to connect with nature and other people without constantly checking text messages, emails, and updating your Facebook status.

4 — New Friends

You are likely to meet people with similar interests when you go on a retreat. When I signed up for my first retreat, the only person I knew was my teacher. After traveling, eating, and doing fun activities together, I ended up leaving with new friends.

5 — New Adventures

Whether traveling abroad or just heading a few hours out of town, going to a new place creates an opportunity for new experiences. During my time on the Heathen Hill farm, I took a botanical class where I learned about different plants and how to combine them with essential oils to make a body cream. I was also able to visit a nearby dairy farm where I was given a tour and got to play with the cows and goats.

A retreat is a wonderful way to detox, relieve stress, and to open yourself up to experiencing the unknown. Life is about balance so it is important to take time from a busy schedule to rest and to connect with new people and places. Book a wellness retreat now and discover how much it can truly enhance your life!

A big “Thank You” to my yoga teacher Dina Ivas and Heathen Hill Yoga for a wonderful retreat!
